Ashwagandha for severe anxiety, showing herbal roots and powder with MB Vitals branding and a focus on daily dosage and safe supplement use.

How Much Ashwagandha Per Day for Severe Anxiety?

You have been anxious for weeks. Sleep is poor, your mind will not switch off, and someone told you ashwagandha might help.

So you searched for how much ashwagandha per day for severe anxiety. Here is the honest answer, in plain words.

There is no proven ashwagandha dose for severe anxiety. Most trials used 250 to 600 mg a day of root extract for 8 weeks in adults with stress or everyday anxiety. If your anxiety is severe, see a doctor first, because a supplement cannot replace proper treatment.

Why Severe Anxiety Needs a Doctor First

Ashwagandha supplement for daily dosage and anxiety.

The US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) says generalized anxiety disorder means worry that is hard to control on most days for at least 6 months, along with symptoms such as restlessness, poor sleep or trouble concentrating, as explained on its generalized anxiety disorder page.

NIMH also says treatment typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or both. It adds that healthy habits can help but cannot replace treatment.

Ashwagandha is not on that list. If you use it at all, do it with your doctor's approval, alongside your treatment and not instead of it.

Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own to try a supplement.

if your anxiety feels unmanageable, call Tele-MANAS, India's toll-free mental health helpline, on 14416 or 1800-891-4416. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare describes the service in a reply in Parliament.

These trials show what researchers gave to adults with stress or anxiety. They are not a prescription for you.

Study

Who took part

Dose per day

Length

What it found

Salve et al., 2019

60 stressed, otherwise healthy adults

250 mg or 600 mg root extract

8 weeks

Both doses lowered stress scores and cortisol

Chandrasekhar et al., 2012

64 adults with chronic stress

600 mg (300 mg twice daily)

60 days

Lower stress and anxiety scores than placebo

2026 safety trial

1,002 adults aged 18 to 65 with stress and anxiety

600 mg root extract in two divided doses

8 weeks

Well tolerated, with ratings similar to placebo

So the range in these trials was 250 to 600 mg a day, and the most common dose was 600 mg a day.

Doses were given as a standardized root extract, usually split into two doses.

That is different from raw ashwagandha powder, so do not copy these numbers with a different product.

Are Higher Ashwagandha Doses More Effective?

Not clearly. In the Salve trial, both 250 mg and 600 mg lowered stress scores more than placebo.

The 600 mg group had the stronger statistical result, but the average scores at week 8 were close: 15.0 for 250 mg and 14.2 for 600 mg, against 16.6 for placebo, according to the paper's results table.

We did not find a trial that tested whether going above 600 mg a day works better. So there is no proof that more is better, even for intense anxiety.

Is Ashwagandha Good for Stress?

It may be. Two meta-analyses, which pool results from many trials, point the same way.

A 2024 meta-analysis in Explore pooled 9 trials with 558 patients. Ashwagandha lowered Hamilton Anxiety Scale scores by about 2 points compared with placebo, and also lowered perceived stress and cortisol.

A 2022 meta-analysis in Phytotherapy Research pooled 12 papers with 1,002 participants. It found benefits for stress and anxiety, and its dose analysis suggested a favourable effect on stress at 300 to 600 mg a day.

These are averages across groups. They do not tell you how much it will help you personally.

What Type of Ashwagandha Is Best for Severe Anxiety Relief?

No type has been proven best for severe anxiety. The trials above used standardized root extracts, so that is the form with the most evidence.

Look for a label that names the extract, states the amount per serving and says which plant part is used. Skip products that only say "ashwagandha blend" with no amounts.

Maximum Safe Daily Ashwagandha Intake and Side Effects

We did not find an official maximum daily limit from a government health body. The longest, largest safety data we found is the 2026 trial above: 600 mg a day for 8 weeks in 1,002 adults.

The 2024 Explore meta-analysis says four of its included studies reported mild to moderate side effects. It also says more information is needed on long-term safety.

The NIH's LiverTox database lists ashwagandha as a likely cause of rare liver injury. It usually appeared 2 to 12 weeks after starting, with signs such as jaundice and itching.

LiverTox says people with cirrhosis or advanced chronic liver disease should avoid it. In most cases the liver injury eased within 1 to 4 months of stopping.

Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or itching. Also ask your doctor before combining ashwagandha with any prescription medicine, especially for anxiety or sleep.
